Fraud Alert: Phony Toll Road Texts are Everywhere

Text message about a missed EZ Pass toll paymentHave you received a text or email about a missed toll payment? Did you scratch your head trying to remember when you might have missed one–or the last time you drove on a toll road?

You’re not alone. Scammers have sent millions of phony “outstanding toll” texts and emails so far this year, all of them designed to get you to click a bad link, give up your personal information and/or pay them for tolls that don’t exist. If you get one, don’t click, don’t reply and don’t forward it to someone else. Just delete it and, if your phone allows it, report it as junk.

As a reminder, never click links in texts or emails that you don’t trust, and never send money to anyone soliciting by text or email. These kinds of voluntary transactions made under false pretenses are extremely hard—sometimes impossible—to undo, meaning you’d be out that money and possibly more if they can steal your payment information or other valuable personal data at the same time.

This is one of many kinds of money scams that criminals deal in. You can learn how to spot and avoid these scams elsewhere in our Fraud and Security Center.
